It's harder, but more brittle than wrought iron.

Viking lamellar and maille armor made from wootz probably wouldn't upgrade it much, if at all. The Ulfberht swords are the best example and were likely made of wootz.

Wootz was incredibly rare (although not depicted as such in the game), and was best used for swords rather than armor due to its edge retention and flexibility. Although it might be more realistic if you could only get it through Haldor.įurthermore, you can't make armor from black metal. This would explain why the only way to get black metal is through "raiding". The Vikings likely acquired this through trade routes. The Vikings didn't really have the ability to make steel in the same way medieval Europe did-and certainly not crucible steel (melted, not forged, and not even developed in Europe until the 18th century), specifically the ultra-high carbon wootz steel, which came from mines in India. My first thought is that it's a playful reference to Scandinavian black metal bands like Bathory and Helheim who have viking themes, but if you look at things historically, I suspect that black metal is supposed to represent wootz steel, or sometimes also referred to as the often misrepresented "Damascus steel".

Anyhow, then I started thinking about the black metal. I suspect the devs went with swamps over bogs though because either not as many people are as familiar with what bogs are or the fact that nothing grows in a bog and would be harder to make interesting.

So it's pretty obvious that the "scrap iron" in Valheim is inspired by bog iron-the Norse peoples got most of their iron through extracting iron bits from peaty wetlands.
